3D Printing for Hobby Projects: RC Tractor Crawler Build

How we helped bring a custom RC crawler to life with over 50 unique 3D printed parts

We were approached with a fun hobby project: a custom RC Tractor Crawler that needed over 50 individual parts printed — none of which were available off the shelf. The files were purchased online, but the builder needed a way to turn them into physical components.

This is exactly the kind of one-off, multi-part job we love taking on at Forma 3D.

Preparing the Print

With the files in hand, we loaded everything into our print software and began optimising for strength, surface quality, and efficiency. The layout was carefully arranged to get the most out of each print bed while ensuring consistent results.

Over 50 unique parts made this a great example of batch hobby printing done right.

Material Selection

Two core materials were used:

  • ASA (Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate): Durable, UV-stable, and perfect for outdoor parts exposed to sunlight or rough handling.

  • TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane): Soft, flexible, and shock-resistant — ideal for components that need to bend without breaking.

Strong where it counts. Flexible where it matters.

The Build Comes Together

Once the setup was finalised, we hit print. Parts came off clean with minimal post-processing, and the full set was packed and ready for assembly.

The result? A fully built RC Tractor Crawler made from 3D printed components — functional, custom, and ready to run.

In Use — and Looking Sharp

We were lucky enough to see the finished crawler once the build was complete — and it looked unreal.

While we handled the printing, the real work was done by the builder. From carefully assembling over 50 custom parts to spending countless hours refining the paintwork, colour choices, and final setup — the level of detail and commitment was next level.

It was awesome to see someone put so much time and energy into the build, and we’re grateful he brought it back in to show the team. Seeing the finished product in action is always the best part.
